Steve Gilbert OBE

Steve is an accomplished Anti-Racism Leader Coach, Organisational Consultant & Keynote Speaker driven by his extensive experiences in navigating mental illness & racism.

Personal & familial experiences of racial discrimination are significant drivers for Steve’s work. As a dual-ethnicity child, with a black British father and a white British mother, growing up in a largely white British neighbourhood, Steve grew up not ‘fitting in’. Steve experienced racism from a young age and despite having two British parents, was often told to ‘go back home’. As he grew older Steve became aware of the role racial discrimination had in the high rates of serious mental illness on his father’s side of the family. It was in learning to live with Bipolar Disorder that Steve started his Anti-Racism work.

Over the past 10 years Steve has honed his anti-racism coaching skills working with a range of National and specialised mental health organisations, including Kooth PLC, Thalamos, Mind, Department of Health & Social Care, NHS Race & Health Observatory Mental Health Working Group.

Steve was recognised in the 2019 Queens Birthday Honours List and appointed OBE for services to mental health.
